Box Score CUMBERLAND, R.I.-After opening their weekend in the Ocean State with a win over Providence College on Saturday, the Fairfield University women's tennis team dropped a tight 4-3 decision versus the host Bryant University Bulldogs on Sunday in a non-conference dual match played at Fore Court in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Fairfield is now 1-3 in the early going of 2024; while Bryant ups its season record to 3-5.
For the second straight match, the Stags earned the double point on Sunday getting wins at number two from Sarah Liu and Maeve Cassidy (7-5) and a point-clinching victory at number three from Katarina Plumtree and Nicolette Loeffler (6-4).
That same duo carried the momentum of their doubles win into singles play, as Plumtree won at number two in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, and Loeffler triumphed at number three in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Unfortunately for Fairfield fans, the host Bulldogs would take Sunday's match by winning at number one singles and then posting a trio of three-set victories at the number four through six singles flights.
"Although we lost I thought we played exceptionally well. The doubles is starting to get where we want it and the fight in singles up and down the lineup is excellent. There's still work to be done but this was a positive weekend," stated head coach Jeff Bricker.
The team will return to action on Monday, March 4 when the Stags open their Spring Break trip to North Carolina with a match at Gardner Webb University. Action is slated to begin with a 1:00 p.m. first serve.
