Swimming & Diving Collect Medals In Day Two At MAAC Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams finished day two of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships within reach of the top spot as the women's team stands in second place with 239 points and the men's team holds third place with 189.5 points.

Members of both teams earned gold medals today with Nora Segurola-Larrinaga coming away with first place in the 50 free while Andrew Cataldo and Dillon O'Connor occupied the first two spots in the 3-meter diving competition.

Larrinaga garnered her medal after completing the distance in 23.43, just .01 seconds better than the runner up. Cataldo accumulated 289.05 points through his rotation on the 3 meter board, eclipsing teammate O'Connor's 284.15 points. Noah Duncan also earned points for his team, collecting 201.30 points for fifth place.

The evening session started with the women's 500 free in which Erin Hoyland earned the Stags' top placement with her time of 5:04.07 for fifth place. Callie Gray was second in the B final and 10th overall by touching the wall in 5:04.72. In the men's 500 free, Joseph Stewart garnered third place overall by completing the distance in 4:28.30. Tim Regan took fifth place with his time of 4:31.36.

Erini Pappas secured a third-place swim in the 200 IM, registering a time of 2:04.24 with Alison Sposili following in eighth place based on her time of 2:08.12. Ed Hunt was the Stags' top finisher in the same event for the men's team, placing 14th overall after completing the course in 1:51.62.

Patrick Gill was just off the pace in the 50 free, posting a time of 20.18 which was tied for third place and just 0.5 seconds off the winning time.

The two relay events completed tonight's session with the women placing third (1:34.51) behind the efforts of Larrinaga, Olivia Thompson, Serafina Viola, and Sydney Scalise. The men's foursome ended the race in fourth place (1:21.09) as Oliver McLaughlin, Alex Sirkowa, Nicholas Besgen, and Patrick Gill comprising the team.

After tonight's events, Niagara University leads the women's team standings with 251 points followed by Fairfield's 239 markers and Marist College's 209 points. The remaining standings include Canisius University (140), Mount St. Mary's (131.5), Siena College (122.5), Rider University (113), Iona University (112), Manhattan College (63), and Saint Peter's University (28).

On the men's side, Marist College leads all programs with 241 points with Niagara (195.5) and Fairfield (189.5) rounding out the top three. Rider (185 points), Iona (159), Mount St. Mary's (117), Canisius (116), Saint Peter's (77), and Manhattan (54).

The third day of the championship features finals in the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, women's 3-meter diving, and 400 medley relay. The finals session will begin at 6 pm.
