Box Score HAMDEN, Conn.-Newcomer, sophomore Anna Neyestani stormed to the singles' title at the inaugural Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Maters Tournament hosted by Quinnipiac University on Sunday morning, as she swept the number seven seed and reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year Caterina Assi of Marist in the championship match, 6-1, 6-3. Neyestani will represent Fairfield and the MAAC at the ITA Conference Masters Championships next month in San Diego.
The transfer from the College of Charleston, who entered play this weekend as the number two seed, swept her way to the crown dropping only one set in four matches. During her title run, Anna defeated the number eight seed in the quarterfinals and the number three seed in the semifinals before vanquishing the seventh seed this morning.
The first-ever MAAC Masters Tournament, which was hosted by Quinnipiac University, was held in a singles and doubles single-elimination format tournament for both women's and men's conference squads.
Neyestani and her teammates will return to the courts at the ITA New England Regional Championships in Cambridge, Massachusetts from October 10-15. Singles and doubles draws will be announced early in the week.
