MAAC Foes Quinnipiac and Merrimack Visit Mahoney Arena This Weekend

First serves on Saturday and Sunday are set for 1 p.m.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball continues a three-match MAAC homestand this weekend with visits from league foes Quinnipiac and Merrimack. First serves at Leo D. Mahoney Arena on both Saturday against the Bobcats and Sunday against the Warriors are slated for 1 p.m.
 
Admission is free for all fans to all Fairfield Volleyball home matches this season.
 
Fairfield University Stags (5-9, 3-0 MAAC)
  • Fairfield swept crosstown rival Sacred Heart on Wednesday at Mahoney Arena to move to 3-0 in the MAAC.
  • Mamie Krubally put down 14 kills on .500 hitting against the Pioneers, improving her team-best average to 2.53 kills per frame.
  • Maya Walker tops all Fairfield hitters in efficiency at .290, with Janna Schlageter adding a .271 clip from the right side.
  • The Stags lead the MAAC in hitting percentage at .213 and have posted a .297 hitting percentage in three MAAC outings to date.
 
Quinnipiac University Bobcats (5-10, 2-1 MAAC)
  • Quinnipiac rebounded from a surprising five-set loss to Saint Peter's with a 3-0 sweep of Merrimack on Wednesday evening.
  • Elena Giacomini has been QU's offensive leader, ranking fourth in the MAAC with 3.48 kills per set on .119 hitting. She has taken a MAAC-high 647 swings in 62 sets to date.
  • Quinnipiac owns the best opponent hitting percentage in the MAAC with foes posting a .194 mark against them.
  • The Bobcats have been without MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Ginevra Giovagnoni since Sept. 3, their fourth match of the campaign.
 
All-Time Series
  • After winning two of three meetings last season – culminating with the program's 13th MAAC Championship – Fairfield owns a 24-4 lead in the all-time series.
  • The Stags and Bobcats have met in the last two MAAC Championship Finals and four of the last eight (2016, 2019, 2022, 2023).
  • Fairfield is 14-0 against the Bobcats in matches played on campus, a mark encompassing Alumni Hall, the RecPlex and last year's pair of meetings at Mahoney Arena.
  • Excluding a doubleheader with Quinnipiac in the spring of 2021, Fairfield last played an in-state opponent in back-to-back matches in 2018 when they challenged Sacred Heart, Yale and Hartford in succession.
 
Merrimack College Warriors (2-12, 1-2 MAAC)
  • Merrimack was swept at Quinnipiac on Wednesday to fall to 2-12 on the year and 1-2 in the MAAC.
  • The Warriors' victories this fall came over CCSU and Saint Peter's.
  • Fairfield and Merrimack shared common non-conference foes Binghamton and CCSU, and will have both played Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart before Sunday's meeting rolls around.
  • Julz Carlat leads the Warriors with 2.72 kills and 3.08 points per set.
  • Saint Peter's transfer Morgan Thurlow heads the effort at the net with 39 blocks in 53 sets for Merrimack while putting down 1.11 kills per frame on .341 hitting from the middle.
 
All-Time Series
  • Sunday's meeting will be the first between the Stags and Warriors. Merrimack joined the Division I ranks in 2019 as members of the Northeast Conference prior to this fall.
  • Merrimack is Fairfield's second first-time opponent of 2024. The Stags challenged and defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 3-1, as a part of BYU's doTERRA Classic on opening weekend. The Lions are currently 11-4 and a perfect 3-0 in the Southland Conference, where they are the back-to-back defending league champions.
 
MAAC Notes
  • Fairfield and Niagara are the two remaining unbeaten MAAC teams at 3-0. The Purple Eagles visit Saint Peter's and Rider this weekend.
  • Canisius, Sacred Heart, Rider and Quinnipiac are all 2-1 in the young league slate.

  • The Stags make the longest road trip of the MAAC slate next weekend, heading to Western New York to tangle with Niagara and Canisius on Oct. 12-13.
  • Action then returns to Mahoney Arena for a five-match homestand beginning on Oct. 19-20 for conference bouts with Saint Peter's and Rider.
