FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After a week of rest, the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to face the Marist Red Foxes in a key conference matchup on Wednesday at 7pm. The Stags will look to keep pace in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), entering the match in third place in the standings.
For the first time since August 24, the Stags will have to respond from a loss as they dropped their first conference match of the season, 2-1 to Sacred Heart.
Elle Scott was the lone Stag to touch net as her second half goal cut the deficit in half, but the Stags could not find the equalizer.
The goal was Scott's fifth of the season and the 25th of her career, becoming just the 12th Stag all-time, and the second this season, to reach that mark.
Fairfield had two chances in the final minute, including a shot by
Ashlyn Walsh that forced a diving stop by the Pioneers' goalkeeper and
Maddy Theriault's shot that trickled just inches wide within the final seconds.
In total, the Stags out-shot Sacred Heart 38-12 including a 14-2 margin with shots on goal. For the season, Fairfield still leads the MAAC with 38 goals, 106 points, and 22.4 shots per game. The Stags also rank second in the country in shots per game, trailing only North Texas.
Marist enters play with a 3-4-2 conference record, which has them in a five-way tie for sixth place in the conference. Maille McDermott is the team's leading scorer with three goals.
Fairfield will return home to host their final two regular season contests, starting with Senior Day on Saturday against Canisius at 12pm.
