FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team poured in five second half goals through a consistent downpour and strong winds to take a 5-2 victory over Boston University in the home opener on Lessing Field.
Ella Pisani and
Payton Zaun each netted a pair while
Bella Bingham added her first collegiate goal as the Stags improve to 2-1 on the season.
"It was a tale of two halves tonight," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "In the first half we were really poor, we got it wrong tactically but made some adjustments at halftime. I thought the team responded well. I'm really glad at the character that our team is displaying. We need to tighten some things up defensively but certainly pleased to get away with the result we got tonight."
The Stags scored all five of their goals in the final 25 minutes of the contest, rallying from a 1-0 deficit in the 20th minute.
Bingham tied the game on a Fairfield corner kick as the ball deflected off the leg of
Brooke Kennedy, finding the freshman towards the center of the box and she flicked the ball over the diving keeper for her first collegiate goal.
The Stags grabbed their first lead on the rainy night as Zaun launched a long shot well outside the box hitting the top corner and giving the Stags a 2-1 advantage.
That lead would last for just two minutes with the Terriers adding a lined shot of their own to put the score at 2-2.
Fairfield answered with two unanswered goals in the span of five minutes as Zaun found a deflection once again outside the box and rocketed the shot in the net to regain the Fairfield lead. Pisani added to the lead by grabbing a pass from Bingham and after a touch lined the attempt past the keeper for her third goal of the season.
Pisani completed the scoring on a penalty kick totaling her fourth goal of the season.
The five goals allowed were the most surrendered by the Terriers in four seasons. The Stags narrowly out-shot their opposition by a 14-13 margin.
Fairfield is back out on Lessing Field on Sunday when they host Rutgers on Sunday at 2pm.
