Box Score WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Behind a dominating effort in the doubles round, the top-seeded Fairfield University men's tennis team captured a trio of singles victories in succession on Saturday morning to sweep No. 4 seed Marist, 4-0, in the MAAC Semifinals. With the victory, the Stags advance to the 2023 MAAC Championship Match tomorrow morning where they will look to claim the sixth championship in program history.
The Stags came out hot to open postseason action, with Jonathan Olive-Blanco and Tolunay Sumer teaming up and taking the topflight in doubles, 6-2. Kaya Gore and Alex Aguiar followed them with a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot, giving the Stags a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Playing to clinch, the Stags would need three victories in singles play to advance to the championship and got to work quickly as Sam Hodges dropped just two games on the way to a 6-2, 6-0 victory to double up the team score. Shortly after Olive-Blanco would complete a 2-0 day for himself on the stadium courts, garnering a straight-set victory 6-2, 6-3 to put Fairfield on the verge of the win.
Sumer in the No. 3 match, and Griffin Schlesinger at No. 6 were at one point both on the cusp of a victory with five games secured after opening set wins in their respective matches. It would be Sumer on advantage point winning a long rally to secure the final point for the Stags, who will play in the conference title game tomorrow morning.
Fairfield men's tennis will take on Siena in the 2023 MAAC Championship game Sunday at 10:00 a.m. from Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
