LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. – Carding the best round of her season Friday afternoon, Julia Towne finished at five under par to take sole possession of first place with a three-stroke lead on the field and pace Fairfield University women's golf after 18 holes at the 2023 MAAC Championships.
Towne opened at one under on the front nine, before nailing a quartet of birdies including two on the last three holes of the afternoon on the back nine to extend her lead on the 45-player field at Disney's Palm Course. The first of three days of action from the Sunshine State also saw Sydney Nethercott finish the round in tenth place at three over par, helping the Stags to third place in the field. Two shots back, Juliette Prud'Homme captured a share of 13th place ahead of Grace Kryscio in a share of 23rd, and Addy Douglas just behind her in a tie for 30th to round out opening round action for the Fairfield Five.
Pacing the team scores, Quinnipiac and Albany in first and second, with Loyola in fourth nine shots back of the Stags and one ahead of both Mount St. Mary's and Dayton. LaSalle sits seventh, followed by Siena and Niagara to round out the field.
