Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – After the doubles round came down to a tiebreak to settle the point, Fairfield University men's tennis battled back in singles, nearly upending the hosts Fordham Saturday night, who took the victory 4-3.
"This was somewhat of a disappointing loss tonight for the men," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "We didn't come out with the intensity necessary in doubles and it cost us. It was a close match, but it feels like we let that one slip away. We have a week to get things right before our first home match next Saturday."
Fairfield would capture the No. 2 doubles round, before garnering a trio wins in the top three singles' flights respectively, led by Kaya Gore who nabbed his second consecutive singles victory of the spring.
The match would open with a win for the Rams in the No. 1 doubles flight, answered quickly by Keean Shah and Kostas Kollias who earned a 6-4 victory in the second flight to bring the two sides level in the round. The third frame of doubles action saw the Stags' Griffin Schlesinger and Alex Aguiar draw level with their opponents at six-all but fell in the tiebreak 7-3.
With the first point going to the home side, a back-and-forth singles' round saw the Tolunay Sumer bring the Stags level with a straight set victory in the No. 2 duel, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Keean Shah followed Sumer who went to a second set tiebreak as well, before battling through to secure a victory 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). Fordham would take wins in the No. 4 and No. 5 duels, followed by Gore nabbed the final win for the Stags in three sets at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Stefan Mitrovic would go to a tiebreak in the third set of his match in the No. 6 slot, falling in a win-by-two tiebreak 9-7 in the final frame.
Fairfield men's tennis will look to bounce back when they return home next weekend when they host Lafayette. First serve is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11 at 6:00 p.m. from the Tennis Club of Trumbull
