Stags Open Final Week of Regular Season on Sunday at Manhattan

Opening tip-off from Draddy Gym is slated for 2 p.m.

Downloadable game notes have been updated to reflect Manhattan's game at Marist on Friday night as well as other action around the MAAC.

THE OPENING TIP
Fairfield University Men's Basketball begins the final week of the 2021-22 regular season with Sunday matinee at Manhattan. Opening tip from Draddy Gym is slated for 2 p.m. with all of the action set the air live on ESPN3.

LAST TIME OUT
After erasing an early nine-point deficit to lead Iona, 29-27, late in the first half of last Sunday's matchup in New Rochelle, Fairfield was on the short side of an eight-minute dry spell as the league-leading Gaels raced out to a double-digit lead and never looked back. At the final horn, the hosts took the decision by a score of 76-58 in a rematch of last season's MAAC Championship Game.

Supreme Cook led the Stags with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Cook guided the Stags to dead heat at 35-35 in the rebounding battle, including 12 offensive boards to Iona's 11.

While Cook was the only Stag in double figures, nine Fairfield players contributed to the scoring. Caleb Green drained three three-pointers to record nine points while Taj Benning and Zach Crisler each scored eight. A trio of Stags – Jake Wojcik, Jesus Cruz and Jalen Leach – finished with five points apiece. To round out the scoring, TJ Long scored four points and Allan Jeanne-Rose netted three.

MAIDOH MAKES IT (MOST OF THE TIME)
Chris Maidoh
is currently shooting .706 (60-85) from the floor. While he does not have enough attempts to officially qualify for the Stags' record books, his shooting percentage is currently the best all-time in a single season for any Fairfield player with more than five field goal attempts.

The official single-season record (min. 200 attempts) belongs to Mark Young, who shot .629 (149-237) from the field in the 1977-78 campaign.

THE MANHATTAN COLLEGE JASPERS AT A GLANCE
Entering the weekend, Manhattan is 14-11 overall and 7-9 in the MAAC. The Jaspers will visit Poughkeepsie to challenge Marist on ESPNU on Friday night before hosting the Stags on Sunday.

Manhattan is led by the MAAC's leading scorer in Jose Perez with an average of 19.4 points per game, with Ant Nelson contributing 10.8 points per contest. As a team, the Jaspers rank third in the conference offensively with 72.6 points per game and last defensively, ceding an identical 72.6 points per game.

LAST MEETING: MANHATTAN 74, FAIRFIELD 67 (2/16/22 at Webster Bank Arena)
The combination of Supreme Cook and Jesus Cruz provided a strong performance inside the lane, but that performance did not overcome a big second half by Manhattan as the Jaspers outlasted the Stags by a 74-67 count at Webster Bank Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

Cook was responsible for 17 points while Cruz added 14 points off the bench with the majority of those coming as a part of Fairfield's 32 points in the paint. Chris Maidoh added 10 points from the post.

On the flipside, Fairfield committed 25 fouls in the game which resulted in Manhattan going to the free throw line 33 times. The Jaspers made the most of those opportunities, converting 30 of them. Jose Perez shot 11-for-12 from the stripe on his way to a game-high 21 points.

On the perimeter, Taj Benning and Jake Wojcik each scored eight points and Caleb Green scored seven. Wojcik also dished out a team-high four of the Stags' 12 assists.

ALL-TIME SERIES
Last week's meeting extended the Jaspers' lead in the all-time series to 58-53 dating back to 1954. The Stags are vying to fend off the first Manhattan sweep in the series since 2017-18.

A SUPREME STAT LINE
Supreme Cook's 11 points and 10 rebounds last Sunday at Iona polished off his seventh double-double of the season, the most since Amadou Sidibe posted nine in 2016-17.

ONE AT A TIME
Manhattan claimed the win over the Stags on Feb. 16 on the back of 30 free throws on 33 attempts. Only Providence (24-36) has had more attempts from the stripe against the Stags this season. The last time an opponent scored 30 or more of its points from the foul line was in 2014-15, when it happened on three occasions: at Marist (37-44), vs. Quinnipiac (31-51) and at Monmouth (30-40).

UP NEXT
The Stags close out the home portion of the 2021-22 schedule on Thursday, March 3 with a visit from Rider. The backend of a Fairfield Basketball doubleheader at Webster Bank Arena tips off at approximately 7:30 p.m. following a 5 p.m. women's game.

Fairfield Men's Basketball will celebrate Senior Night prior to the contest.
