BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving programs both ended the second day of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships with 232 team points. For the women, the total places them on top of the team standings, four points better than second-place Niagara University. For the men, the points set the Stags in second place behind Rider University's 268 points.
The championship awarded medals in today's session for the 500 free, the 200 IM, the 50 free, the 200 free relay as well as the men's 3-meter dive. The Stags were well represented in nearly every event as the two teams combined for six medals on Thursday.
The women picked up a pair of medals during the competition with
Erini Pappas earning first place in the 200 IM, sporting a time of 2:03.30, and
Sydney Scalise collecting third place in the 500 free, registering a time of 5:01.77.
The men garnered four medals with Joseph Stewart recording first place in the 500 free after touching the wall in 4:25.36 and Dillon O'Connor taking the top spot in the 3-meter dive with 278.95 points. Alex Belfer secured second place in the 50 free with his time of 20.52 while Evan Fair was third in the 200 IM after completing the event in 1:49.78.
Fairfield had several additional student-athletes reach the final of their respective events, beginning with
Shannon Feeley taking sixth (5:08.66).
Alison Sposili swam the 200 IM in 2:08.02 which was fifth in the standings. Ed Hunt was just off a medal in the 200 IM, ending the race with a time of 1:49.99. In the 3-meter dive, Lukas Stanton posted 242.30 points for fourth place while Noah Duncan tallied 211.50 points for seventh place.
The 200 free relay teams also competed in the final event of the night with both Fairfield entries finishing fourth. The women's version ran the race in 1:36.18 behind the efforts of
Olivia Thompson,
Sydney Scalise,
Serafina Viola, and Ameila Sicignano. The men's team finished the event with a time of 1:21.69, a foursome that included Evan Fair, Peter Gori, Joseph Stewart, and Alex Belfer.
The championship continues on Friday when the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back, the women's 3-meter dive, and the 400 medley relay will take place. The morning session begins at 10 am with the finals beginning at 6 pm.
