BOSTON, Mass. -- The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished up the first day of competition at the three-day Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University. The Stags are currently ranked sixth in the team standings with the women scoring 128 team points and the men posting 205.5 team points.
Both teams showed well in several events with sophomore Joseph Stewart securing the top finish for any Stag on the day. After winning his heat with a time of 4:30.73, Stewart came back with a better time of 4:29.53 in the final which earned him second place in the event. Two men's student-athletes placed in the top 10 of the 200 IM, namely Evan Fair and Ed Hunt. Fair turned in a swim that took 1:51.23 that brought him sixth place in the final while Hunt was just over a second off that time, completing the distance in 1:52.68.
Alex Belfer also earned a top ten finish in the 50 free, tying for the seventh spot after touching the wall in 21.04. He later anchored the 400 medley relay team which came away with eighth place after combining for a time of 3:24.19. The Stags were represented by Oliver McLaughlin, Chris Ford, Evan Fair, and Alex Belfer during the event.
The women's team also had a few top 10 finishes beginning with two placements in the 500 free early in the day.
Sydney Scalise started the team's successful swim in this event, bringing home a 7th place finish after registering a time of 5:01.0.
Erin Hoyland also secured a solid placement after completing the race in 5:07.92 which brought about a ninth-place finish.
Erini Pappas proved to be a force in the 200 IM with two quality efforts in the preliminary and the final. She started the day by swimming the preliminary in 2:09.64 but shaved seconds off that mark by returning to the pool for a time of 2:04.99 in the final, leading to her seventh place finish. Pappas later started off the 400 medley relay that took 11th place on the day after combining for 3:52.58. Pappas was in the pool first followed by
Cailey Stockwell,
Maggie O'Donnell, and
Serafina Viola.Â
The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams will continue their participation in this event on Saturday which also includes Northeastern, Boston University, Boston College, Georgetown University, and the University of Massachusetts. The preliminaries begin at 10 am with the finals slated for a 6 pm start. Saturday's events include the 200 medley relay, the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back, the women's 3-meter dive and the men's 1-meter dive followed by the 800 free relay.
