FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will close out their regular season slate when they make the short trip to Hamden, Conn., to face crosstown rivals Quinnipiac on Wednesday at 2:30pm. The Stags enter play with a 5-3-1 record in the conference, racking up 16 points which is ranked fifth. To qualify for a top-four position in the standings, and home field advantage in the MAAC Quarterfinals, the Stags must win their game against the Bobcats and await the decisions of Niagara and Siena's matches.
The Stags will be playing their first game in a week after defeating Saint Peter's 2-0 in the final regular season home contest. Both goals were scored in a five minute span in the first half with
Maddie Kiely touching net in the 24th minute and Saint Peter's depositing an own goal in the 29th.
Allie Kirby set up both opportunities as her long throw in found the edge of the goal box where Kiely was able to get her right foot on the ball and push it past the keeper.
Five minutes later, Kirby sent a long cross into the box that caused another scrum in the box. While trying to clear the ball, a Saint Peter's defender kicked the ball into the net to complete the scoring.
The Stags out-shot the Peacocks 19-7 in the game with the Stags making three saves.
Gena Pike got the start and played the first 70 minutes in goal to pick up a pair of saves.
Juliette Grasso saw the final 20 minutes with one stop.
Quinnipiac bring a 7-3 conference mark into the match, placing second in the MAAC with 21 points. Rebecca Cooke leads the MAAC with 12 goals and is tied with her teammate Selena Salas for second in the conference with 26 points. Salas has picked up eight goals and a conference best 10 assists.
The Bobcats also lead the MAAC with a 0.73 goals against average, ranked in the top-40 in the country.
The Stags will await the location and the opponent of their next match in the MAAC Quarterfinals which will start on Sunday, October 31.
