BOSTON, Mass. – Twenty-two members of the men's and women's swimming and diving team competed in the Boston Winter Open this past weekend. The men tallied 15 new top 10 all-time performance and the women had a strong showing as well.
The top 10 all-time performances started with
Thomas Willemse as he placed ninth in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a final time of 21.68. He placed seventh in the 200 Yard Breaststroke at 53.10 and third in the 200 Yard Backstroke clocking in at 1:54.24.
Arion Mete finished tenth in the 100 Backstroke at 53.80.
Nick Giardiello placed eighth in the 200 Yard Backstroke at 1:57.32.
Brody Biebel tallied four top 10 times of his own starting with a tenth-place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle clocking in at 1:44.41. He then placed seventh in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:42.29.
Nicholas Tsigas finished sixith (16:27.99) and Biebel finished eighth (16:29.48) in the 1650 Yard Freestyle. Biebel placed seventh in the 200 Yard Butterfly at 1:56.76 while
Jack Benavides placed ninth at 1:57.45.
Jack Benavides also placed second in the 100 Yard Breaststroke at 57.30 and third in the 200 Yard Breaststroke at 2:06.21. He then tied for fifth in the 200 Yard Individual Medley at 1:55.76.
Nick Giardiello also placed ninth in the 400 Yard Individual Medley clocking in at 4:13.56.
"Our men have shown a tremendous amount of determination this season" said Head Coach
Anthony Bruno. "Those that competed in Boston have set us up great for the MAAC meet next week"
"This meet has been the start of our championship run the last two seasons" said Bruno. "I am really proud of the way we swam at this meet. The team showed pride and represented the program well"
"Several of our seniors concluded their collegiate swimming careers this weekend" said Bruno. "I can't say enough positive things about this group. I appreciate the love they have for Fairfield and this program. They have been a critical part of our transformation over the last three seasons."
The Stags will make their way to Buffalo N.Y. this week to compete in the 2020 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships from February 12 to February 15.
