Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – The Fairfield University Baseball team got ahead early but could not keep the momentum as they dropped their final midweek contest of the season, 6-3 to UMass. The loss was just the third for the Stags in midweek contests as they finish their campaign with a 10-3 record in these games. The Stags recorded seven hits in the loss with the last one being the most important as it represented the 263rd in
Jack Gethings' career as the senior shortstop ties Tucker Nathans '11 for the most career hits in program history.
Gethings also becomes the first Stags to reach 80 hits in a season.
RBI hits by
Anthony Boselli and
Tim Zeng got the Stags on the board early as Fairfield scored three runs in the first two innings. Boselli lined a run scoring single to open the scoring in the first while Zeng brought home a run down the right field line in the second.
On the pitching side,
Jake Noviello did not allow a hit until the third inning as the ninth place hitter grounded a single through the left side. The Minutemen were able to scratch across their first run of the game in that third frame as the line drive just hit off the second baseman's glove.
UMass would take the lead with three runs in the fifth, after tying the contest in the fourth.
The Stags bats would go quiet, especially in RBI situations as the Stags stranded 10 baserunners in the first six innings, including the bases loaded in the third.
Gethings would be the next hit for the Stags as he lined a single up the middle to tie the Fairfield milestone.
Gethings was one of seven different Stags to record a hit in the contest.
Peter Horn,
Bryson Cafaro, and
Ian Halpin combined to throw 3.2 scoreless frames to end the game.
The Stags will conclude the 2019 regular season with a non-conference doubleheader at UMBC on Saturday at noon.
