NEWARK, Dela. – The Fairfield University Baseball team recorded a season-high eight runs and 12 hits, leading the team to clinch their first series win of the year, defeating Delaware 8-2 in the middle game of a three game series. Four Stags tallied multiple hit games, led by three hits by
Anthony Boselli.
"We had timely hitting, good defense, and solid pitching today," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Boselli really sealed the deal down the stretch."
The biggest of Boselli's three hits came in the ninth inning as he capped off the best offensive performance by the Stags this season with a three-run homer to left.
Boselli helped the Stags grab the lead in the fifth as he capped off a four run inning for the Stags with a RBI double.
Tim Zeng started the scoring in the frame with a RBI single through the right side, tying the contest at 1-1. Fairfield would score their next two runs on a wild pitch and a fielding error before Boselli's double.
Jack Gethings, who was another Stag to record two hits in the game, had his biggest knock come in the seventh with a RBI double. Gethings also scored his team-leading seventh run of the season in the game, bringing his career total to 126. He is now tied with
Kevin Radziewicz and Kevin McCall for eighth on the all-time list.
Along with the bats, the Fairfield pitching led the Stags to the victory, led by
Trey McLoughlin who hurled a career-high seven innings and setting a new personal best with nine strikeouts. Out of those nine punch outs, McLoughlin got eight Delaware batters to strikeout swinging. The sophomore finished his longest outing of his career strong by retiring his last five hitters.
Brendan Harkin and
Peter Horn combined for the final two scoreless innings.
Boselli, Gethings,
Justin Guerrera, and
Dylan Reynolds were the Stags to collect multiple hits in the game. For Boselli, he raised his team-best batting average to .457 and brought his RBI total to 10 for the year.
With his two hits, Gethings brought his career total to 195 which is tied with Tom Lopusznick for ninth all-time.
Fairfield will look for their first series sweep of the season with
Michael Sansone toeing the rubber against the Blue Hens on Sunday at 12 noon.
