FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will honor their five-member Class of 2020 as part of their Senior Night festivities before the Stags host Iona in the final regular season home contest of the season. Kick-off from Lessing Field is scheduled for 7pm, with the Senior Night ceremonies commencing around 6:50pm.
Jenn Wahlig,
Julia McGuire,
Julia Kleczkowski,
Melanie Hingher, and team operations assistant
Alexa DiComitis, who played three seasons with the Stags, comprise the senior class that will be honored on Wednesday night. In their four seasons, the group have combined for over 185 appearances with 98 starts before making their final regular season appearance.
Wahlig was at the forefront of a crucial 2-2 road draw to Rider on Saturday afternoon as the Stags stayed in second place in the MAAC, two points ahead of the Broncs. Wahlig tallied the game's tying goal in the 69th minute as she converted a pass from
Brooke Hernon to draw even. Fairfield had to fight back from two deficits, tying the game at 1-1 on a Rider own goal on a cross sent into the box by
Kelsey Gilbert.
Offensively, the Stags out-shot Rider 21-8, including three of the four attempts in the overtime period. Fairfield put 10 of those shots on target, but Rider's goalkeeper Carmen Carbonell was up for most of the challenges, finishing with nine saves. Hernon led the Stags with a career-high seven shots, with three of those needing stops from the keeper.
The goals were the 30th and 31st for the Stags this season, surpassing last year's season total with three regular season games to go. The number is tied for the conference lead and ranks them 44th in the NCAA. The 31 scores is the most by a Stags team since 2015.
On the defensive side, the impressive draw at Rider also marked the fourth time in the conference slate the Stags have held their opponents to fewer than 10 shots. Through their first seven MAAC games, only Niagara has surpassed the 10 shot plateau as they tallied 11 in a 5-1 Fairfield victory.
Iona enters play winners of two of their last three matches with 1-0 victories over Saint Peter's and Quinnipiac. Amber Crispin and Faith Preziosi are the scoring duo of the team combining for 14 of the team's 19 goals. Crispin leads the MAAC with eight while Preziosi is tied with Fairfield's
Stephanie Tsangaris and
Liz Dumas for fourth with six goals.
The Stags are 19-5-5 all-time against the Gaels including a 9-2-1 mark at home. The Gaels have taken the last two matches with a 3-2 victory last season and a shootout win in the MAAC Championship First Round game in 2017.
Fairfield can clinch a spot in the MAAC Championship Tournament with a win or draw on Wednesday night and can clinch a top-four spot with a guaranteed home match with a victory.
The Stags will hit the road for the final two regular season matches, starting with a visit to Siena on Saturday at 1pm.
