LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped a pair of games at the Loyola-Marymount Tournament, falling to Colgate University by a 3-2 count and to the host school by a 6-1 score.
In the first game, the Stags grabbed an early lead by posting a run in both the first and second innings. Fairfield sent home its first run in its first at-bat of the game, a rally which started with a single by
Makenna DiGuilio. The outfielder stole second base and took third base when the catcher's throw was off target. After
Courtney Hankins walked to put runners on the corners,
Lacey Olaff singled up the middle to put Fairfield in front of Colgate.
The Stags pushed their lead to 2-0 with a run in their next at-bat, an inning which started with a lead off single by
Drew Westford. Sam Medford followed with a double that placed two runners in scoring position with no out.
Rachel Sieber brought home the team's second run with an RBI single, spotting starting pitcher
Lauryn Rhinehart a two-run advantage. The freshman made those runs stand for four innings, tossing shutout ball until the bottom of the fifth when Megan Romero launched a solo home run to cut into the team's deficit.
Colgate rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth inning which started a base hit and a walk. Rhinehart yielded to
Danielle Tringali, who surrendered a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring double that put the Red Raiders in the lead, 3-2. Fairifeld went in order in the top of the seventh inning to end the game.
The second game was determined by the long ball as Loyola Marymount University used three home runs to power its way to a 6-1 win. Molly Grumbo started the hit parade with a two-run homer in the first inning. The lead increased to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning as Sabrina Tebou smacked a three-run homer off starter
Destinee Pallotto. Fairfield scored its run in the third inning as
Amanda Ulzheimer picked up a double to begin the scoring chance.
Mikayla Rubin sent her teammate to third base with a base hit, while
Angelina McGuire brought the run home with a ground out. Loyola Marymount added a solo home run in their half of the fifth inning.
