FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will host unbeaten Northeastern on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall, marking the final home game for the Stags in the 2018 calendar year.
Fairfield dropped their first game in their home arena as they fell to visiting William & Mary in the final minutes, 60-54 on Sunday. Fairfield hung around for the entire contest, with their largest deficit at just eight points early in the second half. The Stags rallied from that score to take the lead on a
Khadidiatou Diouf traditional 3-point play at the 5:33 mark of the fourth quarter. Fairfield would regain a one-point advantage on a
Sam Lewis baseline jumper with 2:53 left in the contest. However, the Stags would not score again as the Tribe ended the contest on a 7-0 run.
Diouf led the Stags with 17 points, one of three players in double figures. Katie Anderson and
Casey Foley also chipped in 11.
In the contest,
Casey Foley drilled her 77th career 3-pointer, tying her with
Sam Kramer for the top spot among active players. Both players are tied for 16th on the program's all-time career list, trailing Sue Bly '92, who finished her career with 81.
Wednesday will also be Fairfield's Teddy Bear With Love promotion as all fans are encouraged to bring a new, unused teddy bear or stuffed animal to be donated to a local children's hospital or charity to receive a free general admission ticket.
Fans who wish to participate but cannot attend can contact Alumni Relations at alumni@fairfield.edu for more information about Teddy Bears With Love.
The Huskies will be bringing in an unblemished 7-0 record into the contest, tying the best start in program history. Northeastern tied the 1968-69 squad for the program's best mark and are one of 24 teams in the country still without a loss.
Northeastern stayed unbeaten as they rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat UMass on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Shannon Todd. The Huskies had trailed by two with 4.4 seconds left after the Minutewomen broke a tie with a lay-up leading to Todd's heroics.
The team's leading scorer Jess Genco was named the CAA Honorable Mention Player of the Week after averaging 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in wins over Florida and UMass. Her highlight of the week came at Florida as the senior drained a program-record tying eight 3-pointers to help the Huskies defeat the Gators for their first-ever victory against a Power-Five school.
The Stags will next head to Hanover, N.H., to visit Dartmouth on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2pm.
