FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will kick-off Fairfield athletics' annual "Herd For A Cure" campaign when they host Canisius on Saturday at 1pm on Lessing Field. During the contest, T-shirts and raffle tickets will be sold and donations will be collected to support the Norma Pfriem Breast Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to promote breast cancer awareness.
The Stags will look to bounce back after dropping a 1-0 overtime decision to Siena on Wednesday night. After playing scoreless for 90 minutes, the Saints were able to record the golden goal just 26 seconds into the overtime period. Fairfield had ample opportunities during regulation, registering 22 shots and a season-high nine corner kicks. However, both sides found the offensive tempo as there were three combined defensive saves on the night.
The Stags will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of the best teams in program history, the 1998 MAAC Championship squad. The squad went 18-2 overall, including a perfect 9-0 mark in the conference. The team still holds the program record with those 18 victories, which included a school best 15-straight. The Stags scored 74 goals that season, which still holds as the most ever scored by a MAAC team.
The Griffs will enter the match with a 4-5-2 overall record and a 1-3-1 showing in the MAAC. The Griffs' lone conference win came against Manhattan on September 22. Junior Madeline Beaulieu leads the squad with five goals, exactly half of the team's total output this season. She also scored the lone goal in Canisius' 1-1 draw against Iona. Junior Alana Rossi has played in all but 21 minutes in net for the Griffs, registering a 1.16 goals against average and a .759 save percentage.
The Stags will hit the road as they play their only road contest in a six-game stretch against Iona on Wednesday at 3pm.
