AMHERST, Mass. – Fairfield swimming and diving put forth a strong effort this afternoon against UMass in their first dual meet of the season but came up short as the women were defeated by a score of 183-112 and the men fell 196-73.
On the women's side,
Sara Ostensen tallied the Stag's first individual event win with a victory in the 1000 Yard Freestyle clocking in at 10:30.52.
Shannon Feeley finished second in the same event with a time of 10:37.29. Ostensen and Feeley also finished first and second in the 500 Yard Freestyle with times of 5:11.00 and 5:13.14 respectively. Ostensen would also finish third in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:10.22).
Madelynn Mowad took first place in the 200 Yard IM with a final time of 2:13.36 while
Alzbeta Andrikova finished second (2:15.47) and
Emily Vlass finished third (2:19.50). Vlass also came in second place in the 200 Yard Breaststroke clocking in at 2:29.25 while
Oreoluwa Cherebin finished fourth in the event (2:32.57).
Sarah Herbold placed second in the 200 Yard Freestyle (1:55.79) and fourth in the 100 Yard Freestyle.
Maria Nitti also finished second in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a final time of 24.32 and finished third in the 100 Yard Freestyle (54.22).
Kelly Cordes placed third in the 100 Yard Backstroke (1:00.66) while
Victoria Krivitsky also came in third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:09.16).
Rachel Landry and Andrikova finished in third and fourth place in the 200 Yard Backstroke.
In the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, Herbold, Nitti, Cordes, and Ostensen finished first with a time of 3:39.84 while
Kathleen Duong,
Morgan Hansen,
Samantha D'Alessandro, and Mowad came in second clocking in at 3:43.13. Cordes, Krivitsky, Hansen, and Nitti also came in second place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay (1:50.43).
Erin Wind and
Caitlin Campbell finished fourth and fifth in both the 1 Meter and 3 Meter Diving.
For the men,
Patrick Boyle started the day with a first-place finish in the 1000 Yard Freestyle clocking in at 10:00.46. Boyle also came in second in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:04.05) and in the 500 Yard Freestyle (4:55.13).
Peter Gori finished second in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:47.22 while
Thomas Willemse came in third in the 100 Yard Backstroke.
Peter Sloan also finished in second-place in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:02.01). Gori again came in second in the 100 Yard Freestyle clocking in at 49.12.
Timothy Cusack-McPartlin finished third in the 200 Yard Backstroke and second in the 200 Yard IM while
Alec Melotto came in second in the 200 Yard Breaststroke.
Jack Benavides also came in second place in the 100 Yard Butterfly (54.56).
In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, Willemse, Sloan, Benavides, and Gori finished in third place with a time of 1:41.63. Willemse, Boyle, Benavides, and Gori also placed second in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (3:24.18).
Lukas Stanton took home a second-place finish in the 3 Meter Diving with a final score of 238.49 and a fourth-place finish in the 1 Meter Diving (200.77).
Fairfield will return to action next Saturday, October 20 as they host the Alumni Meet at the RecPlex Pool starting at 10 A.M. They will then take on Monmouth in their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) dual meet of the season on Saturday, October 27 at 12 P.M. in West Long Branch, N.J.
