Women's Swimming and Diving Defeat Iona, Men Come Up Short

 
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University women's swimming and diving team took down Iona this afternoon by a score of 196-92 while the men put together a very competitive meet against one of the top men's programs in the conference but ultimately fell 175-113.
 
On the women's side, Colleen Young earned her first individual yard school record in the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:23.00 surpassing the previous record of 2:23.76 set by Lauren Kennedy in 2009.  She also won the 200 Yard IM with a final time of 2:12.28.  Sara Ostensen started the day with a win in the 1000 Yard Freestyle clocking in at 10:29.40. She also won the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:08.00) and the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:12.15).  Sarah Herbold took home the win in the 200 Yard Freestyle at 1:56.92 as well as the 100 Yard Freestyle with a final time of 54.17.  Kelly Cordes won the 100 Yard Backstroke (59.15) and Victoria Krivitsky won the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:07.49).  Morgan Hansen also won the 100 Yard Butterfly in 57.97.  Both women's relay teams won their events in the 200 Yard Medley Relay (Kelly Cordes, Victoria Krivitsky, Morgan Hansen, and Maria Nitti) clocking in at 1:47.59 and the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (Maria Nitti, Sarah Herbold, Kelly Cordes, and Sara Ostensen) with a time of 3:40.51.  Kylie More also won the 1 Meter Diving (216.90) and the 3 Meter Diving (205.10). 
 
For the men, Benjamin Kebbell took home the first win of the day clocking in at 52.62 in the 100 Yard Backstroke.  He also won the 100 Yard Freestyle (47.63) and the 100 Yard Butterfly (51.69).  Jordan Rahurahu also had three wins on the day starting with the 200 Yard Butterfly where he finished with a time of 1:54.98.  His other two wins were in the 500 Yard Freestyle (4:43.58) and the 200 Yard IM (1:57.96).  Alex Shabecoff also won both the 1 Meter Diving (190.60) and the 3 Meter Diving (178.15). 
 
"Today we saw many season best performances and just a lot of tough racing" said Head Coach Anthony Bruno. "It was great to see the team really put it together from the first race to the last race. This was a real test for us to see where we stack up against the conference, Iona has established itself as one of the top teams in the MAAC and I am really proud of how we responded to the challenge." 
 
The women's team will have a quick turnaround tomorrow afternoon as they will take on Sacred Heart at 12:30 P.M. Both the men and women will take on Manhattan on January 31 at 5 P.M. at the RecPlex Pool.
