FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's soccer team will compete in their 500th match in their program history when they travel to Vestal, N.Y., to take on the Binghamton Bearcats on Friday at 7pm in a match that will be broadcasted on ESPN3. The Stags will stay in the upstate New York area and take on ACC member Syracuse on Sunday at 1pm.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Stags had early opportunities in their first home match of the season but would end up falling to St. John's 2-0 on Sunday night. The Stags recorded three corner kicks and two shots in the opening five minutes, but could not get the ball past the line.
Sara Plowman and Gaby Diodati tallied shots on target through the first 45 minutes, but the Red Storm goalkeeper was able to fully extend on both saves to keep the Stags scoreless. Plowman had another chance in the second half as she lofted the ball from near midfield but the goalkeeper had enough time to react and hit the ball over the crossbar.
THE BINGHAMTON SCOUTING REPORT: The Bearcats have not dropped a result through their first four matches of the season, posting a 3-0-1 record with their only draw coming against MAAC foe Niagara. The Bearcats return eight starters from a team that barely missed the America East playoffs last season and have already scored eight goals this year compared to their 12-marker total in 2016. Newcomers Kayla Saager and Essie Bonney are tied for the team lead with a pair of goals with sophomore Ryan Reilly also chipping in two tallies.
THE ORANGE SCOUTING REPORT: The Orange have also gotten off to a quick start in the 2017 campaign beginning with a 2-1-1 record with their only loss coming against No. 8 Florida. Included in those results is a 1-1 draw against then nationally ranked UConn. Sydney Brackett leads the squad with three goals in 2017 after scoring one goal during her freshman campaign last year, with the marker coming against the Stags. Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan has recorded an 1.18 goals against average this season while having a .762 save percentage. Last season, Brosnan recorded a career-high 96 saves.
UP NEXT: The Stags will return to Lessing Field for the final non-conference match of the season when they welcome NJIT on Friday, September 8 at 7pm.
