Vertula and Lombardi Named To All-MAAC Second Team

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshmen Shelby Vertula and Emily Lombardi were both selected to the All-MAAC Tennis Second Team as announced by the league Friday evening. The pair becomes the first set of Fairfield freshman to both be named All-MAAC in the same season since Caroline Emhardt and Monica Yajima in 2011.

Vertula earns the Second Team selection as the No. 5 singles player for the Stags. During her rookie campaign, she posted an 11-15 overall record in singles and played her best stretch of matches during conference action. Against MAAC opponents, she was 5-2 only losing to Marist and Quinnipiac. She was also a crucial part of securing the team's bid to the conference tournament. The freshman fought back from two breaks down to clinch the match over Niagara and punch Fairfield's ticket to the MAAC Tournament back on April 9.

Lombardi has stepped right in for the Stags in her first season, and was recognized by the league with Second Team honors at No. 6 singles. Recording a 13-12 winning mark in singles play, she was even better in league play at 6-1. Her only conference loss of the season came against Proyfon Lohaphaisan of Quinnipiac who earned First Team All-League nods. Five of her six MAAC wins came in straight-set fashion, only being pushed to three-sets once. Against Siena, she dropped the first set before winning the final two over Juliana Goehner.

Fairfield opens up MAAC Tournament play by taking on top seeded Quinnipiac in the semifinals on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
