FAIRFIELD, Conn.-The Fairfield University women's tennis team moved to 2-0 in conference play and 4-9 overall on Friday afternoon with a 6-1 home MAAC victory over the visiting Siena University Saints (8-6, 1-3 MAAC) at the Walsh Athletic Center Courts.
Fairfield quickly showed its dominance; the Stags took the doubles point winning all three matches, as Maria Gell and Anna Neyestani earned a 6-2 win at number one; Sarah Liu and Nicolette Loeffler triumphed at number two, 6-4, and Maeve Cassidy and Sophia Harris prevailed at number three, 6-2.
The hosts put the match away to remain unbeaten in the MAAC with five, straight-sets singles wins.
Anna Neyestani, playing in the top flight, got Fairfield off to a flying start with a 6-1, 6-2, victory.
Nicolette Loeffler followed Neyestani's triumph with a 6-4, 6-4 win at number four, and Maeve Cassidy clinched the match win topping her opponent at number six singles, 6-4, 6-2.
With the match in hand, the Stags picked up two more singles wins with Maria Gell prevailing 7-5, 7-5, at number five and Sophia Harris' opponent retired at number three with Harris leading the match, 6-4, 5-2.
The Fairfield women will wrap up a busy week of tennis action on Sunday morning when they hit the road to continue MAAC play with an 11:00 a.m. tilt with Merrimack College that will take place in Reading, Massachusetts.
