Women’s Soccer Readies For MAAC Tournament Action

FAIRFIELD, Conn – There's no better place to create lifelong memories than at the site quite literally known as the "happiest place on Earth." The Fairfield University women's soccer team will try and make the next few days magical when they travel to Orlando, Fla., the site of the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. The Stags, who will be in search of the program's eighth conference title, will open up the five day tournament against the tenth seeded Iona Gaels on Saturday at 12:30pm.

FAIRFIELD'S TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Stags are one of the more storied championship teams in the league, with seven MAAC titles, the most among active MAAC schools.  In total, the Stags have had 38 players recognized on the All-Tournament team and have had seven Tournament MVPs, with the most recent being Ahna Johnson who clinched her award with a hat trick in the finals.

WHERE MAGIC HAPPENS: This will be the fourth time that the Stags will compete in the MAAC Tournament in Orlando, Fla. Fairfield has had success in these tournaments, advancing to the Championship Match in two seasons (winning the tournament in 2005 and losing to Monmouth in the finals in 2013).  The only season where Fairfield failed to win a game in Disney was in 2009, when the third-seeded Stags were upset the sixth-seeded Niagara.

THE SEVEN SEED: This seventh-seed will be the highest seed the Stags have ever held in the MAAC Tournament, surpassing their fifth-seed in 2005. That 2005 squad would become the first fifth-seed in MAAC history to win the Championship. Since then, Siena broke that Fairfield record when they won the 2015 title as the six-seed. The 2009 Marist team was the most successful seven seed in league history, when they advanced to the semifinal match before losing to No. 6 Niagara 2-1 in overtime.

UP NEXT: If the Stags are victorious against No. 10 Iona on Saturday they will advance to the MAAC Quarterfinal contest against No. 2 Manhattan on Sunday at 11:15am on ESPN3.
