Zyskowski Sets New Fairfield Record

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Swimming and Diving team split the meet against St. Francis on Saturday afternoon. The women's team won by the score of 154-77 while the men fell 136-90.

The highlight of the day was freshman Phillip Zyskowski who broke the school record in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 17:02.47. The record was previously held by junior Jameson Duncan who swam the same event in 17:04.95 back in January of 2015.

Zyskowski also earned a second place finish in the 400m freestyle (4:16.46) to end his afternoon and set a new personal best in the event. Nick Delfico and Nick Giardiello also picked up a pair of second place finishes and personal bests, Delfico grabbed the second spot in the 100m backstroke (1:04.74) and Giardiello finished second in the 200 IM (2:22.44).

For the women, Kelly Cordes had an impressive afternoon with two first place finishes. In the 200m freestyle she touched the wall in 2:13.15 and in the 400m freestyle finished in 4:43.10 to lead all swimmers and set a new personal best. Emily Holman also earned a top place finish in the 50m freestyle (28.93) and placed third in the 100m freestyle (1:05.84), both setting new personal bests. The women's relay teams also finished first in both relay events on the day. The team of Juliana Lally, Emily Vlass, Donna Lam, and Oreoluwa Cherebin grabbed the top spot in the 200 Medley while Cordes, Lam, Cherebin, and Colleen Young earned first place in the 200 freestyle.

The divers also put up a solid performance as Jane Rice placed first in both events. In the 1-meer she scored 233.17 and in the 3-meter scored 212.33. Kylie More and Leah Pawelczyk both upped their personal bests with their scores on th 1-meter board. More scored a 221.10 and Pawelczyk a 198.07. Alex Shabecoff scored 179.10 on the 1-meter and 170.33 on the 3-meter to earn points for the Stags against St. Francis.

The women are back in action on Monday against Siena at 1:00 p.m. at the RecPlex Pool. And the men compete again on Friday against Iona.
