Stags Fall in Overtime

Updated 9/22/2016 12:49 PM with stat corrections.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey lost 4-3 in overtime to Holy Cross on Wednesday evening.

For Fairfield, it was their second overtime loss in less than a week and marked their fifth loss in a row. The Stags seemed to have the offensive advantage firing off 16 shots to just nine for the home side. And racked up 11 penalty corners while only allowing five. But their chances didn't translate into a win on this night.

The scoring opened up with Emma Clark tipping in a pass from Ann Burgoyne to give the Stags a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. The Crusaders responded promptly, when in the 24th minute Suzanne Noone knocked her shot in to level the score.

No more than three minutes later, Maureen Connolly got her first of the day to put her team up 2-1 in the first half. That one goal advantage would hold through the remaining minutes of the first stanza.

Out of the break, Fairfield quickly tied the score at 2-2. Hannah Pike inserted a penalty corner to Jaclyn Gallagher who positioned the shot for Erin Buckley. The junior defender rocketed her shot from the top of the circle for her first goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later, in the 42nd minute, Holy Cross took back the lead with a goal from Emily Loprete.

But in the 55th minute, Maddi Haberl received a pass from Kaley McMullen and deflected it just enough for it to trickle past the Holy Cross keeper and tie the game once again.

That 3-3 score would carry the two sides into overtime. In the extra period, Burgoyne would have an excellent chance for the game winner that was called off for kicking. And in the 79th minute, the home team struck again. Connolly tallied her second of the night, firing a shot to the far side past a diving Caitlin Bennett for the game winning goal.

Fairfield will head back home this weekend when they host Virginia for a noon time game on Sunday at University Field.
