FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team was shutout 4-0 by Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
The Cavaliers controlled the game from the start and had the advantage in most of the statistical categories throughout the day. The visitors outshot the Stags 22-7 and had eight penalty corners to Fairfield's three.
Caitlin Bennett faced 15 shots on goal during the game, making 11 stops in cage.
Fairfield allowed just one goal through the first 35 minutes. Virginia executed a penalty corner to perfection as Lucy Hyams inserted, Laura Schnatmeier stopped, and Erin Shanahan fired the shot into the back of the net for the first score of the game.
In the second half, the Cavaliers wasted no time in adding to their one goal advantage. Tara Vittese was awarded a penalty stroke in the 40th minute and buried it in the back of the net.
Back to back goals came just five minutes apart in the 64th and 69th minute for the visitors. First, Hyams dribbled her way up the midfield and unleashed a shot into the top right corner of the net. Then, Gretta Ell got on the board when she collected a rebound and put her own shot on cage to give her team a 4-0 lead with just over six minutes to play.
Fairfield never found their offense rhythm and were unable to score in a game for the first time since October 14, 2015 in a 4-0 loss at Harvard.
The Stags will play a pair of matches next weekend when they travel to Hofstra on Friday and host Providence on Sunday.
