FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University tennis teams will open up their spring MAAC slate playing at Niagara University on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
Last weekend, the men's team competed in three matches at the Yale Invitational. On Saturday morning, the team fell to Marist 6-1. They then played Stony Brook in singles action before wrapping up with doubles play on Sunday morning, falling to the Seawolves 5-2. The final match of the weekend was against the hosts who topped the Stags 6-1. Among the winners for Fairfield was Brad Orban who earned No. 1 singles victories against Stony Brook and Yale, as well as a No. 1 doubles win with teammate Ofir Solomon over Yale. Dylan Appel also earned two singles victories, against Marist at the fourth spot and at the No. 2 over Stony Brook.
This will be the women's first match since returning from their road trip to North Carolina. During their travels they were 0-2 against Gardner-Webb and UNC Greensboro, falling 7-0 and 6-1 respectively. At Greensboro, all three Fairfield doubles pairs fell by a score of 6-1 giving the home side a 1-0 advantage. And in singles action, Nicole Aragones played great in a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Amy Ellis at the No. 1 spot. Fairfield played well against the Spartans, but still fell in straight sets in the remaining five matches.
The Niagara men's team is heading into the weekend with a 2-7 overall record and most recently defeated Daemen College 5-3 on March 6. The Purple Eagles dropped the doubles point, but lost just once in singles action to grab the win over the Wildcats.
On the women's side, the Purple Eagles are 4-8 and lost their last two to Cornell and Stony Brook. Against the Seawolves, Niagara fell 6-1. Their lone win came from Shannon Wong at the No. 4 spot who battled to a three set victory.
Up next for Fairfield, both teams will travel to Hofstra on Wednesday, March 23.
