FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team will play a pair of matches of the weekend. First, the Stags host Drexel at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Friday at 7:00 pm. Then, they will travel to Newark, New Jersey to face NJIT on Saturday at noon.
Last weekend, Fairfield was topped by Seton Hall, 7-0. At the number one doubles spot, Nicole Aragones and Courtney Connors fell 6-0. Karen McKeough and Meghan Zimmer dropped their match 6-1 at the number two spot. And at third doubles, Cecilia Parla and Gabriella Campos dropped a 6-1 decision. Aragones competed at the number one singles and fell in two sets 6-2, 6-3. McKeough dropped two sets to Hannah Liljekvist 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Zimmer dropped straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to Isabell Klingert in the No. 3 spot.
The Dragons come in boasting a 4-1 overall record this season. However, last time out they were topped by Penn, 7-0, for their first loss of the season. At the No. 1 spot, Drexel is led by junior Honami Yazawa who holds an 11-5 overall record this season in singles play.
The Highlanders of NJIT are riding a two-match winning streak having just bested Marist, 5-2, on February 10. Junior Nathalie Habegger competes at No. 1 singles and defeated Marist's Karly Pang 6-2, 6-2. While at No. 2 singles, freshman Rafaella Sampaio clinched the match over the Red Foxes with a three-set victory, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.
After this weekend, Fairfield hosts UMBC at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Saturday, February 20.
