SHERMAN, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's and women's golf teams swept the ECAC Championships this week at The Club at River Oaks, earning both team titles while Kevin Duncan and Jackie Schofield collected individual honors.
The Stags' men's team overcame a two-shot deficit after day one to overtake Bryant and win the ECAC crown by a single stroke. Fairfield carded a 287 yesterday to the Bulldogs' 285, but made up the different this afternoon. Led by Duncan's 72 and a 73 from Eric Austin, the Stags registered a round-best 293 to clip Bryant, which posted a 296 today, by a razor-thin margin of 580 to 581.
Duncan shot a 70 on the par-71 course on Monday, rounding out his two-day total at 142. Austin also recorded a 70 yesterday and turned in a 73 today to land one stroke off the pace with a 143.
Though golfers from Bryant took the next four spots to round out the All-Tournament Team, the Stags' depth kept Fairfield in front of the Bulldogs. Alex Ferrante tied for eighth place with a 149 (71-78), Kellen Jordan shared 11th place with a 151 (76-75) and Thomas Urciuoli was one shot back in 13th place are carding a two-day 152 (79-73).
The victory marks the first ECAC Championship for the Stags.
