Box Score 2 NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Head Coach Todd Kress reclaimed his status as the program's all-time wins leader as the Fairfield University volleyball team swept NJIT on day two of the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational. The Stags fell in straight sets to Bucknell to wrap-up the weekend slate of action.
The Stags' (1-2) first win of 2015 was the 114th victory in Kress' career on the Fairfield sidelines. The 19-year NCAA Division I head coaching veteran, who returned to the Stags prior to the 2014 campaign, was previously the program's all-time wins leader with 94 triumphs during his initial tenure from 1995-98. Kress guided Fairfield to a pair of MAAC Championships and collected a trio of MAAC Coach of the Year Awards during that stretch.
"To once again be the wins leader here at Fairfield simply brings back incredible memories of my first stint here," said Kress. "That team composed of players including Liz Bower, Joanne Saunders, Corrine Carlson and many others, represents some of the best memories of my coaching career. That team never quit and was never satisfied. They represented the best of Fairfield athletics and at their peak were a top-25 program. The win today takes me back to that team and also reminds me of what this current team could eventually become."
In today's win over the Highlanders (25-21, 25-16, 25-14), eight different Stags recorded kills. Skyler Day sent home nine finishers in addition to a team-leading nine digs, and Megan Theiller picked up eight kills. As a unit, Fairfield hit an even .300 (39-12-90), with the offense running through Sydney Buckley (16 assists) and Kiley Lingenfelter (13 assists).
The trend of parity continued at the net, where four Stags had a hand in at least three of the team's eight total blocks. Megan O'Sullivan got a piece of four rejections, while Theiller, Sydney Williams and Chanel Cooper were each a part of three send-backs.
In the back row, libero Mallory Bechtold had seven digs, Theiller picked up six and Buckley contributed five.
In the nightcap against Bucknell, Theiller helmed the Stags' attack with 14 kills. Oyinkansola Akinola added eight for Fairfield and Day contributed seven. Lingenfelter and Buckley again shared duties as the primary setter and distributed 18 and 12 assists, respectively.
Defensively, Fairfield topped its prior effort with 11 team blocks. Williams was a part of eight send-backs – the most of her young collegiate career – while Theiller got a piece of four blocks and Akinola and Kaitlyn Fisher each added three.
Bechtold once again led the back row from the libero spot with 11 digs, while Buckley, Day and Theiller had six apiece.
For her performance throughout the weekend, Day was the Stags' representative on the All-Invitational Team. In her first three outings in a Fairfield uniform, Day averaged 3.67 kills and 2.22 digs per frame.
"Today was a good opportunity to give us some looks with different student-athletes at different positions," said Kress. "The pre-conference schedule allows us to work through some challenges and adversity while preparing for MAAC play. We will get better this week in practice and again find the intensity that we brought each day in preseason practice."
The Stags return to the court and begin their home slate next weekend with the 2015 Fairfield Invitational on Sept.4-5. Fairfield will challenge Holy Cross, Boston College and New Hampshire as a part of the six-team, nine-match affair from Alumni Hall.
