Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches and kept pace atop the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings with a 3-0 sweep at Saint Peter's this afternoon. The Stags were led by 13 kills from Megan O'Sullivan, who also had a hand in two blocks to run her career total to 200 send-backs.
Now standing at 10-4 in the MAAC, Fairfield (15-9 overall) has secured its 20th consecutive conference postseason berth. The Stags remain tied in the loss column with Rider and Siena – their next two opponents – after wins for all three clubs on Saturday.
“I thought we responded well after coming out flat in the first set. We served well and were able to get Saint Peter's out of system for most of the second and third sets,” said Head Coach Todd Kress. “We need to put this win behind us quickly and reset for a very good Rider team tomorrow.”
In today's match, O'Sullivan hit .417 en route to her match best of 13 kills. The junior co-captain of the Stags is averaging 4.10 kills per set during the team's six-match winning streak (86 kills in 21 sets).
Skyler Day added her team-leading 12th double-double for the Stags, totaling 10 kills (10-2-25, .320) and 10 digs. Also on the outside, Megan Theiller added seven kills for the offense and recorded a match-best 12 digs in the back row.
Rounding out the offense, Oyinkansola Akinola added five kills on nine errorless swings, Chanel Cooper notched three finishers, Sydney Williams picked up two and Kaitlyn Fisher had one.
Sydney Buckley doled out 26 assists in addition to three kills of her own, with Kiley Lingenfelter stepping into the setter spot in one set and handing out 11 helpers. The duo ran the Fairfield attack to a .248 attack percentage.
The Stags also recorded nine points from the serving game. Buckley, Day, O'Sullivan and Theiller each landed two winners, and Taylor Rudeen served up one ace for Fairfield.
Fairfield entered the day leading the MAAC and ranked 16th in the nation in opponent hitting percentage and maintained its defensive intensity today – holding the host Peacocks to a .154 clip.
Saint Peter's got kills from six different players, led by five apiece from Kenyale McGinnis and Lauren Behrens. Both players also guided the back row with nine digs each. Kaitlyn Sitton handed out 18 assists for the Peacocks.
The Stags conclude the road portion of their schedule tomorrow – Sunday, Nov. 8 – with a 1 p.m. contest at Rider.
