FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams dropped their opening meet to Rider University. The women fell 160-132 while the men lost 180-110.
Grace Goddard and Donna Lam saw victories in their first collegiate meet. Goddard finished first in the 200y butterfly with a time of 2:12.69, while Lam placed first in the 100y freestyle (56.72). In the 100y freestyle Michelle Pleban finished right behind Lam with a time of 56.81. Goddard also finished second in the 200y IM with a time of 2:19.16.
Kelly Cordes had a strong showing in the 200y freestyle finishing in second with a time of 2:01.12. Kelly Mulligan swam well in the 200y backstroke event posting a 2:13.25 to finish second.
Jane Rice took the top spot in the 3-meter dive with a score of 217.87 to beat out second place by more than 40 points.
Connor Daly won the 200y butterfly with a time of 1:54.49, just narrowly edging out the second place finisher for Rider. Daly also notched a top place finish in the 200y IM.
Daniel Pires scored well in the 3-meter dive to earn a second place finish (273.52). He also finished third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 256.88.
Both teams are back in the pool tomorrow as they head to Jersey City for a tri-meet against Saint Peter's and Manhattan at 11:15 am.
