SHELTON, Conn. -- The Fairfield University rowing teams opened the fall season with a strong showing at the Head of the Housatonic, highlighted by a first-place finish by the men's varsity 8 in the non-IRA division.
The varsity 8 A boat paced its event with a time of 14:32.4, five seconds better than runner University of Connecticut A. The Stags also placed a B shell in the race, a unit which secured fourth place in 15:21.7.
Fairfield's A boat consisted of Travis Day, Alex Nowicki, John O'Neill, Charles Serpa, Casey Fuller, Jack Santoro, William Quentin, Michael Giuliana, and coxswain Olivia Vita. The B boat included George Bellos, Herbert Marache, James Laviolette, James Mulhall, Jordan Greco, John Cervone, William Patrick Mills, Gregory Coppola, and coxswain Connor Kim.
The women's varsity 8 also placed two entries in their respective event and came away with a 19th place and 23rd place finish. The A boat crossed the line in 17:20.8 behind the efforts of Nolan Campbell, Maria DiBello, Liz Franger, Chloe Scherpa, Jackie Ozyjewski, Maria Levano, Julie Hefferon, Leanne Anderson and coxswain Nicole Karwashan. The B boat posted a time of 18:20 with Amanda Murphy, Clancy Gray, Colleen Sheridan, Elizabeth O'Hara, Briana Mullaney, Michelle Wilson, Amber Bagdonas, Kerry Clarke, and coxswain Victoria Marano comprising the team.
The women's novice 8 was next in the lineup and secured a fifth-place finish by completing the course in 21:35.3. Lina Foncello, Annemarie Dennen, Natale Scotto, Eileen Keenan, Rebecca King, Maria Frisoni, Megan Dobensky, Katherine Unfried, and coxswain Erin O'Gallagher represented Fairfield in the event.
The women's varsity 4 A boat registered an eighth-place finish (18:47.4) while the B boat recorded a 13th-place finish in the Stags' next event. Liz Franger, Casey Bowler, Maria Levano, Jeannette Eckelman, and coxswain Nicole Karwashan rowed the A boat. Leanne Anderson, Julia Hefferon, Megan DiBello, Nolan Clare Campbell, and coxswain Nicole Karwashan made up the B entry.
The Stags final event of the day was the collegiate men's 4+ non-IRA which saw three Fairfield boats compete in the race. The C boat was the team's top finisher with a seven-place finish (16:51.7), followed by the B boat (16:58.6) and the A shell (17:10.1). Alex Nowicki, Travis Day, Michael Giuliana, William Quentin and coxswain Connor Kim were in the A boat. Charles Serpa, Casey Fuller, Jack Santoro, John O'Neill, and coxswain Tim Valente were in the B shell. George Bellos, Herbert Marache, James Laviolette, James Mulhall, and coxswain Olivia Vita comprised the C entry.
