PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team finished their second day of competition at the Saint Joseph's University Invitational on September 27. Rookie Nicole Aragones was the standout for the Stags, advancing to the quarterfinals in Flight 1 singles.
In the round of 16 of Flight 1 doubles, Stag standout duo Aragones/Sarah Stuhlmann fell to Saint Joseph's duo Claire Minnoe/Kelly Mulquin, 8-6, while Fairfield pair Kaila Nelson/Allison Radde were clipped, 9-7, by Delaware pair Denny LaMachia/Kim Milla.
In the consolation bracket of Flight 1 doubles, Aragones/Stuhlmann defeated Sacred Heart's Katie DeRienzo/Lindsey Post, 9-8(5), to advance to the final round tomorrow. Stags pair Nelson/Radde defeated Sacred Heart's Paige Olson/Sabrina Navarro Lopez, 9-7, in the quarterfinals before falling to Drexel duo, Erin Bowsher/Lea Winkler, 8-5, in the semifinals.
In the round of 32 of Flight 2 doubles, Fairfield pair Erika Nannery/Emma Samson lost to Villanova pair Connor Brewer/Alexandra Krogius by default. Stags duo Karen McKeough/Meghan Zimmer fell, 8-2, to Drexel duo Ryshena Providence/Kendra Bunch. In the round of 16, Fairfield's Renee Nouri/Stephanie Ziegler were clipped by Temple's Rebecca Breland/Yana Kohn, 8-1.
In the consolation bracket of Flight 2 doubles, Nannery/Samson battled but ultimately fell to Sacred Heart's Taylor Gurda/Emma Pezzullo, 9-8(7), in the round of 16. In the consolation bracket quarterfinals, Fairfield's McKeough/Zimmer defeated LaSalle's Celesta Smith/Jada Smith, 8-3, to advance to the semifinals tomorrow. Stags duo Nouri/Ziegler were edged, 8-5, by Drexel duo Jennifer White/Amanda Tilles.
In Flight 1 singles, Aragones defeated host Hawks' Kristina Eisenbrand, 0-6, 7-6 (4), 10-3, in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals where she fell to Drexel's Nicole Pivonka, 6-0, 6-1. Also in the round of 16, was Radde who was edged by Delware's Arielle Shuren, 7-6(5), 6-3, and Stuhlmann who fell, 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-7, to Drexel's Erin Bowsher.
In Flight 2 singles, Nelson defeated Villanova's Linley Busby, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to the round of 16 where she fell to Kelly Mulquin, 6-3, 6-2, from Saint Joseph's. Fairfield's Samson was blanked, 6-0, 6-0, by Temple's Monet Willis in the round of 16.
In the round of 16 of Flight 3 singles, McKeough fell, 6-0, 6-2, to Ryshena Providence from Drexel while Zimmer was edged, 3-6, 7-5, 10-2, by host Hawks' Lauren Roy.
In the round of 32 of Flight 4 singles, Nouri fell, 6-3, 6-2, to Anne Marie Devlin from Saint Joseph's while Ziegler was edged, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7, by Drexel's Mel Reyes. Nannery was defeated by host Hawk's Mary-Margaret Ewens by retirement.
The Fairfield women's tennis team will continue action at the Saint Joseph's Invitational tomorrow. The Stags will begin with doubles play starting at 8:30am.
