WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The fourth-seeded Fairfield University men's tennis team fell, 4-1, to top-seeded Marist College in the 2014 MAAC Tournament semifinal match at Mercer County Park this morning.
Fairfield started off strong, winning the doubles point. At No. 2 doubles, Ofir Solomon and Dennis Zlobinsky downed the Red Foxes' Dalen Klassen and Trym Nagelstad, 8-2. The Stags clinched the point when standout duo Ian Tesmond and Cameron Amyot defeated Marist's Lorenzo Rossi and Will Reznek, 8-3, in the No. 1 spot. At No. 3 doubles, the Red Foxes' Matteo Giudici and Joseph Dube were leading Fairfield pair Bjorn Merinder and Peter Colliard, 5-4, when the match was called.
Marist (14-4; 8-0 MAAC) tied the match at 1-1 when Reznek defeated Zlobinsky, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. The score became 3-1 in favor of the Red Foxes after Dube clipped Amyot, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 4 spot and Giudici edged Colliard, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot. Marist clinched the match when Fredrik Bjerke defeated Merinder, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. In the No. 1 spot, Rossi was leading Tesmond, 3-6, 2-2, while Klassen was leading Solomon, 3-6, 3-5, in the No. 2 spot. Both matches remained unfinished.
Fairfield finished the 2013-14 campaign with a 10-10 overall record and a 4-3 mark in conference play. This year, six Stags earned All-MAAC honors.
