FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield men's tennis team is on their way to compete in the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship this weekend at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. The Stags finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-9, and a conference mark of 4-3, which earned the No. 4 seed. Fairfield will face top-seeded Marist College at 11am during Saturday's semifinal round.
The Stags are seeking redemption after falling to the Red Foxes in last year's MAAC Championship final. This is the first time in six years that the two teams will meet in the semifinal round. Both teams have comprised the last six MAAC Championship finals. During the 2014 regular season, Marist (13-4; 7-0 MAAC) topped the Stags, 6-1, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Fairfield's singles play has helped them earn their seventh consecutive MAAC Championship berth. The Stags finished 26-16 in conference singles play, with Ofir Solomon posting a perfect 7-0 MAAC record. Heading into the tournament, Solomon is on a 14-match win streak while Ian Tesmond enters with a three-match win streak. In doubles play, standout duo of Tesmond and Cameron Amyot posted a 12-7 overall record with a 4-1 mark in conference play.
Last season, Fairfield earned the No. 2 seed in the 2013 MAAC Championship. They defeated third-seeded Niagara, 4-3, in the semifinal match before falling to Marist, 4-2, in the championship match.
Second-seeded Monmouth (15-7; 6-1 MAAC) will take on third-seeded Niagara (12-10; 5-2 MAAC) in the other semifinal match on Saturday. The winners of the two semifinal matches will face one another in the Championship on Sunday, April 27.
