Women's Lacrosse Travels to UConn on Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team will travel to Storrs, Conn. on Saturday, March 22 to compete against UConn at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The game is set for 1pm.

Fairfield (4-2) vs. UConn: The two teams met last season on March 9 in Fairfield, Conn. where the Stags fell to the Huskies in overtime, 12-11. Fairfield's last win over UConn came on February 28, 2009 in a 17-10 decision. The Stags are 4-7 all-time against the Huskies dating back to 1997.
 
A Look at the Huskies: UConn is 4-4 on the season. The Huskies have posted victories over Quinnipiac, James Madison, Oregon, and Fresno State and have fallen to UMass, Dartmouth, Boston College, and New Hampshire. UConn returns standouts Lauren Kahn and Carly Palmucci. Last season, Kahn scored 42 goals with 23 assists for a total of 65 points while Palmucci tallied 30 goals with 18 assists for 48 points. So far this year, Katherine Finkelston is the Huskies' leading scorer, with 20 goals. Goalkeepers Shannon Nee and Marya Fratoni have split time in the net for UConn. This season, Nee has tallied 51 saves with a save percentage of .436 while Fratoni has recorded 13 saves with a save percentage of .433.
 
Last Time Out: The Stags defeated New Hampshire, 10-8, on March 14 at Cowell Stadium. Melanie Raso, Courtney Chmil, Jenna Slowey, and Riley Hellstein scored two goals apiece for the Stags, who also received goals from Jamie Leone and Colleen Reynolds. Play was back and forth until Fairfield took an 8-6 lead at 12:29 in the second half and never looked back. Both teams scored another two goals but Fairfield stayed ahead, handing New Hampshire their fifth loss of the season. Goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras tallied six saves.
 
Weekly Winner: Freshman Riley Hellstein earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly honors for her stellar performance in the Stags' victory over New Hampshire on March 14. Hellstein was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week after scoring two goals and tallying an assist and four draw controls for Fairfield. Her first goal of the game resulted from a free position shot, and tied the game at 3-3, while her second goal gave the Stags a 6-5 advantage over the Wildcats. Hellstein recorded an assist on the goal scored by Chmil, which gave Fairfield an early 2-1 lead over New Hampshire.
 
Looking Ahead: After tomorrow's contest, Fairfield will continue action on the road. The Stags will face Sacred Heart University on March 26 before returning home to open conference play against Niagara University on March 29.
