Stags Hold Off Quinnipiac, Win Fifth-Straight

Box Score

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Stags were able to recover from a second set loss and hit .344 the rest of the way in defeating the Quinnipiac Bobcats 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-14, 25-15).  The victory extended Fairfield's season-long winning streak to five matches.

“Today was a perfect example of whom we can be and yet who we currently are,” Head Coach Todd Kress said.  “We were able to dictate play in three sets, but had significant mental lapses and lack of energy in set two.  That being said, we showed good fight to bounce back and take the final two sets on the road.”

Hadley Orr tied a career-high for the fifth time this season posting 16 kills while contributing three block assists, and two service aces.

“Hadley played like a true L1 that she has become for our team,” Coach Kress said.  “It was another solid effort for her offensively.”

Fairfield (14-10, 10-4 MAAC) was aggressive from the service line throughout the match, posting eight aces, including a career-best four by Bella Guanciale.  Libero Camille Coffey recorded her ninth straight double figure dig match, posting 21 through the four sets.

The Stags got off to a good balanced start with five student-athletes tallying two kills in the first frame.  Orr was joined by Megan Theiller, Megan O'Sullivan, Lindsay Weaver, and Caitlin Stapleton to reach that mark.  Fairfield forced 11 errors from Quinnipiac (2-25, 0-14 MAAC) and limited the Bobcats to a -.091 hitting percentage.

The Bobcats got their revenge in the second stanza, as they defeated Fairfield 25-17.  It was the first set the Bobcats have taken from Fairfield this season.  Quinnipiac committed just four errors led by Allison Leigh who hit .500 on five kills on ten swings.

After the ten minute break, the Stags were able to settle down.  Fairfield committed just one error in the stanza on 12 kills.  Guanciale also recorded three of her service aces in the frame, all of the coming within four attempts.  Marilyn Peizer checked into the set and recorded two kills on just three swings.

Orr dominated the final set.  The junior notched nine kills on a .467 hitting percentage.  Orr had more kills (nine) than the entire Quinnipiac team (seven) during the frame.  Carsen Mata dished out 12 assists in the frame, the most in the match.

Fairfield has now won eight of the last nine matches and will continue their road trip when they visit Iona next weekend.
