Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Pam Coufos and Cassidy Boegel combined for 11 points and the Stags set a home single game record for goals in defeating Saint Peter's 8-0 at Lessing Field.
“We scored a couple of very good quality goals,” Head Coach Jim O'Brien said. “We wanted to make a statement, we wanted to play well, create some opportunities for ourselves and we did.”
Coufos dished out a career-high three assists on the night, which ties a Lessing Field record. Kelli Hurley was the first Stag to accumulate three assists in a home game back in 1996, and Maureen Miller became the second in 2001. The three assists was also tied for the fifth most in a single match in program history.
“I think it's really important when you come off the bench to make a change and just bring up the energy,” Coufos said. “Whenever I come off the best I try my best to give my best effort and try my best to pump up the team and get some scoring opportunities for everybody.”
Fairfield (10-2-1, 4-0-0 MAAC) got the scoring barrage started in the fourth minute when Michelle Coate fired a shot from outside of the box into the net for her second career goal.
The Stags would have plenty of opportunities over the next 25 minutes but could not convert any. Fairfield took seven shots but was whistled for three offside violations.
Fairfield broke through again in the 30th minute when Erin Pettersen took a pass from the left side and pushed it passed the goalkeeper for her second score of the season. It was the first of three assists for Coufos on the night.
The Stags would get more breathing room from Saint Peter's (2-11-0, 1-3-0 MAAC) when Michelle Kowalski took a one-timer off a pass from Boegel to give Fairfield a 3-0 halftime lead.
Fairfield took the first nine shots of the second half and managed to score three goals. Two minutes into the second half, Torey Camporini hit a ball that was misplayed by the goalkeeper and went inside the net for the fourth Stag goal. The score was assisted by Coufos.
One minute later, Coufos would add another assist when she floated a ball inside the box that was handled by Boegel and hit into the left side of the net for the fifth Fairfield goal.
Coufos would cap off her career-night by scoring her second goal of the season. In the 58th minute, Coufos would convert on a pass into the box from Boegel to give the Stags a 6-0 lead. It was also the second assist from Boegel on the night, a new career-high.
Boegel, the reigning MAAC Player of the Week, would finish her career-match off by dribbling down into the box and unleashing a shot from 10 yards out that found the back of the goal. It was the seventh goal of the season for Boegel.
“I think I've been working hard and the team has been working hard so it's been paying off,” Boegel said. “Whether I've been scoring or someone else has been scoring.”
Fairfield would end their scoring two minutes before the final whistle. Emily Wieczorek found a loose ball after a pass from Sydney Arnoff and kicked it into the goal. It was the second goal of the season for Wieczorek and the first career assist for Arnoff.
In total, Boegel set a career-high with six points, Coufos set a career-best with five points and three assists. The Stags would out-shoot Saint Peter's 41-5 in the match. The 41 shots are the most taken in a home game for Fairfield. The previous record was 31, which the Stags accomplished three times.
The Stags also set a program-record with 22 points in a home game, two higher than the previous best. Fairfield also tied the record for most assists in a home game with six, the sixth time they have accomplished that number.
The eight goals was the most scored in a match since 2002, also against Saint Peter's.
The Stags will now turn their attention to arguably the most important regular season game of the year. Fairfield will host the current second-place Monmouth Hawks on Saturday night a 7pm in a rematch of last year's MAAC Championship Final.
“One thing is we can start focusing on Monmouth,” Coach O'Brien said. “We wanted to make sure we had a good performance today but we knew it was difficult looking ahead. I think the biggest thing was we took care of business today, got the job done and now we can focus on Monmouth on Saturday.
