Stags Stay Hot With Convincing Win At Marist

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Offensively and defensively the Stags dominated the road game from the opening whistle en route to their third-straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win, 4-0 over Marist.  Four different student-athletes scored a goal and two more tallied an assist in the victory.

“Road trips to Marist College have not been kind to our program in recent years,” Head Coach Jim O'Brien, who won his 100th game at Fairfield, said.  “We talk about doing something about our performances with a hard fought resounding win.  The team did just that with a comprehensive, dominant display tonight.”

Fairfield (9-2-1, 3-0 MAAC) got offensive contribution throughout their roster tonight with seven different players tallying a shot.  Pam Coufos and Erin Pettersen each tallied their first goal of the season.  The Stags now have received a goal from nine different players with five others tallying an assist this season.

“Our balanced scoring is great to see,” O'Brien said.  “We have suffered some key losses to injury of very talented players and so many have stepped up for us.”

The Stags controlled the match from the beginning registering the first seven shots, four of which forced goalkeeper Ashley Houghton to make a save.  Fairfield almost got on the board in the 13th minute but Faith Daley's attempt hit the post and the score remained 0-0.  In the 21st minute Coufos dribbled up the right side and touched the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Just two minutes later, Megan O'Brien took a header pass from Michelle Kowalski and kicked it into the upper part of the net for her second score of the year.

Marist (1-7-2, 0-2-2 MAAC) was held without a shot until the final 30 seconds of the half when Amanda Epstein pulled her shot wide.

The Stags would notch the first five shots of the second frame, scoring once in that span.  Pettersen deflected a free kick back over the goalie's head to put the Stags up 3-0.  Fairfield would cap the scoring when Cassidy Boegel headed in a corner sent into the box by Jessica Broadbent for her fifth goal of the season.  Boegel also had two scores against Quinnipiac.

Fairfield has now won three-straight games and has outscored their opponent 9-1 during that span.  The eight goals is the most in a two-day span for the Stags since last October.

“We have always been known as a team that improves over time and this season is no different,” O'Brien said.  “My coaching staff and I have always stressed player development and we feel that we are now getting better as a team on a daily basis.”

Fairfield will look to keep their scoring touch alive when they host Saint Peter's University on Wednesday, October 8 at 7pm.  That game will be streamed live on FairfieldStags.TV.
