Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – For the second-straight game, the Stags have defeated a team that was unbeaten in the MAAC. Fairfield took down Rider in straight sets (25-16, 28-26, 25-22) and earned their first road win of the season.
"Today was the definition of a team win," Head Coach Todd Kress said. "We got contributions from different people at significant times in the match."
The Stags (8-9. 4-3 MAAC) pulled away in the first set by scoring 11 of the first 15 points. Lindsay Weaver had all three of her kills in the set during that span. Fairfield led by as many as 11 with the score 21-10. In the set, Bella Guanciale served for nine consecutive points and the Stags forced Rider (11-8, 5-1 MAAC) to hit .000 with nine attack errors.
The second game proved to be closer as the Stags would have to win in extra time. Hadley Orr and Marilyn Peizer led the way with five kills apiece. Orr had just one error in the frame and hit .400 in the game. Coffey led all players with 11 digs in the second, and had 18 in the first two sets. Fairfield had 21 kills in the second, 10 more than they had in the opening stanza. The Broncs did have set point leading 24-23, but back-to-back-to-back kills from Orr ended the game and gave Fairfield a 2-0 lead.
Fairfield would find themselves trailing by as many as five points in the third set with the score 13-8. Fairfield would tie the game at 15 after a Rider attack error, and take the lead for good after an ace by Orr. The junior had two kills in the third to finish with nine. In her last five sets, Orr has 20 kills with just three errors. Megan O'Sullivan led all scorers with six kills on just seven attempts in the third. O'Sullivan hit a team-high .857 in the frame. The Stags would only need seven digs to finish the third set.
"Our balanced offensive numbers speak volumes about whom we are as a team and I think we are starting to figure that out," Kress said.
In the match, the Stags did not allow a Rider service ace, after allowing 11 to Siena a couple of games ago. Carsen Mata had a match-high 40 assists and Weaver tied for a match-high with 10 kills. Coffey recorded 21 digs, and is now five away from reaching 1,000 career digs. The Stags will look to tie a season-high and win their third-straight match when they travel to Saint Peter's tomorrow.
