BOSTON -- The Fairfield University men's tennis team topped Boston University, 4-1, this afternoon to improve to 3-0 on the year.
The entire match was a close battle. The Stags nipped the Terriers for the doubles point to start the day. At No. 3 doubles,
George Tioutine and
Bjorn Merinder downed Stefan Lemire and Lucas Bombonatti, 6-4. At the second spot,
Ofir Solomon and
Dennis Zlobinsky teamed up to defeat Jesse Frieder and Jake De Vries, 6-5(3) to secure the point. At No. 1 doubles,
Ian Tesmond and
Cameron Amyot were tied with their BU counterparts, 5-5, when the Stags won the point and play was called.
At No. 1 singles, Tesmond pulled out a 6-4, 6-5(2) win over C. Varapongsittikul. Tioutine defeated Frieder, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Merinder posted a 6-3, 6-5(5) win over Emilio Teran at No. 5 singles.
The Terriers' lone point of the day came at No. 4 singles where Mario Sandoval edged Zlobinsky, 6-2, 6-1.
Two matches were left unfinished. At No. 3 singles, Solomon and Lemire were tied 5-5 in the third set. Lemire took the first set, 6-5(3), but Solomon countered with a 6-5(2) win to even the match. At No. 6 singles, Jay Leelavanich was leading
Peter Colliard, 3-0, when play was called.
Fairfield returns to action on January 31 at NJIT.
