STAMFORD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's tennis team opened the second half of their season with a 6-1 victory over Fordham late Friday night at Stamford Indoor Tennis Club. The Stags swept all six singles matches while the Rams took the doubles point.
Fordham (1-3) opened the night by winning the doubles point. At the top spot, Kuba Kowalski and Matty Najfeld topped
Dennis Zlobinsky and
Ofir Solomon, 6-4. As No. 2 doubles, Alastair Barnes and J.J. Tauil topped
Ian Tesmond and
Peter Colliard, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles,
George Tioutine and
Bjorn Merinder were tied, 5-5, with Max Peara and Michael Puntillo when play was called.
The Stags regrouped in singles play. Zlobinsky set the tone with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tauil at No. 4 singles. At the fifth spot, Merinder downed Pedro Alonso, 6-4, 6-2, to put the Stags ahead. Tesmond then defeated Kowalski, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. At No. 6 singles, Colliard rebounded from a first set loss to defeat Peara, 5-6(3), 6-3, 6-0, and seal the win for the Stags.
At No. 2 singles, Najfeld retired to give Tioutine a 2-6, 6-4, 3-1(ret) victory. Closing out the night was Solomon who outlasted Barnes, 6-1, 4-6, 6-5(4).
Fairfield (2-0) returns to action on Sunday at Boston University. The Stags then stop at NJIT on January 31 to close out the month.
