CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Fairfield University volleyball team rallied to force a fourth set but Boston College held on for the 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-13) victory this evening at the Boston College Invitational.
Senior
Rachel Romansky had her fourth double-double of the year with 31 assists and 14 digs. Junior
Caitlin Stapleton had 11 kills and three total blocks while
Marilyn Peizer had 10 kills.
Sophomore
Hadley Orr posted 12 digs, six kills, and three assists while
Carsen Mata had 21 digs and four assists.
The first set was closely contested. The Eagles were clinging to an 18-17 lead when a kill by Katty Workman sparked a 4-1 run. Peizer cut the gap to 23-20 but BC was able to hold off the Stags for the 25-20 win. Boston College worked its way out to a 14-9 lead in the second set. Fairfield rallied back, pulling within 16-14 on a kill by
Hayley Moyer. The Eagles returned it lead to four points, 19-15, after a Stags error and went on to the 25-20 win.
The Eagles (4-2) opened the third set by surging out to a 7-3 advantage. The Stags whittled away the deficit, pulling within 11-10 on a block by
Maddie FitzPatrick and Stapleton. Boston College pulled away once again but Fairfield rallied late moving within 23-21 on an ace by
Camille Coffey. Workman countered with a kill but the FitzPatrick held off set point with a kill of her own to make it 24-22. After an Eagles attack error, Mata came through with an ace to tie it 24-24. Boston College then committed back-to-back attack errors to give the Stags the 26-24 win.
The Stags led early in the fourth set but the Eagles gained momentum regained the lead. Boston College closed the match on a 7-0 run for the 25-13 win.
Moyer finished with six kills, four digs, and two total blocks while FitzPatrick had six kills and three total blocks.
Fairfield (1-5) closes out competition at the Boston College Invitational tomorrow against Bryant University at 10:30am. The Stags will travel to the LIU Brooklyn Blackbird Invitational next weekend. The Stags open the tournament against Colgate on September 13 and take on Cornell and LIU Brooklyn on September 14.
