Reco McLaren scored the team's first goal and added an assist on the second score as the Fairfield University men's soccer team posted a 2-0 win over the University of Massachusetts. The Stags scored both goals in the second half, allowing the team to win their second straight game and improve to 2-1-1 on the season.
McLaren opened the scoring just three minutes after halftime when he beat the goalkeeper to the far post on the team's first shot of the half. The Stags would finish the half with seven shots and register 15 shots during the game. Fairfield improved the score to 2-0 when freshman
Martin Lindgren netted his first collegiate goal in the 80th minute. McLaren started the play when he brought the ball into the box. He sent a pass to the left side of the box which Lindgren accepted about 10 yards from goal. The rookie placed a shot just inside the far post to push the advantage to 2-0.
Goalkeeper
Joe Martin recorded his second straight shutout by making five saves in 90 minutes of work. The freshman faced 19 shots from UMass but kept the Minuteman off the scoreboard which extended his scoreless minutes streak to 204 minutes. Martin has not allowed a goal since the 66th minute against Northeastern University on September 7. Nick Ruiz tallied seven saves for UMass as the Stags placed nine of their 15 shots on goal.
Fairfield finishes its three-game road trip with a 2-1 record, setting up a three-game home stand that begins on September 24 against UMass-Lowell on September 24. The Stags will also welcome LIU Brooklyn on September 28 and Monmouth University on October 5 as part of the three-game run.
