Men's Soccer Add To Unbeaten Streak With 2-0 Win Over Mount St. Mary's

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team celebrated its senior with a pregame ceremony, and the seniors showed their appreciation by having a hand in tonight's 2-0 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday night. The victory kept the Stags' unbeaten streak intact, improving to six straight games (3-0-3 record).

"I am very proud of the team effort as well as with two clean sheets in a row," Head Coach Krystian Witkowski said. "We created some good chances and could have stretched the score of the game. We also had good defensive discipline tonight. I am very proud of the seniors and this was a great way to honor their legacy."

That legacy was enhanced by a strong effort that ended up seeing the senior group contribute in various ways. At the top of that effort was a strong performance from William Pierce who had a hand in both goals, while goalkeeper Viktor Nikolov literally had his hand in five saves to preserve the shutout.

The two teams made a go of it in the first half with both creating opportunities but none amounted to anything for the scoreboard. Fairfield had the better time of it though, outshooting the Mount by a 9-3 margin. It was only the play of goalkeeper Julian Marcos that kept Fairfield from advancing to far, making five saves off those nine attempts.

The second half appeared to be more conducive for scoring as the two teams found more creative ways to attack the goal. While Mount St. Mary's owned a slight edge of 10-8 in the shot column over the final 45 minutes, Fairfield was the side that was able to complete two scoring chances.

The first opportunity came on a penalty kick but not on the first attempt. Pierce was stopped on his try from the spot but amply followed his shot and touched the rebound into the far corner to put the Stags in front by a 1-0 score. The goal came just three minutes into the second half.

It was Pierce who ignited the second goal as well, tracking down a ball sent along the left channel. Once he secured it, he sent a cross from just outside the left box which was collected by Pipeloore Olanrewaju six yards from the goal. He was able to flick the ball with his right foot, sending his shot into the upper right corner to provide his teammates with a two-goal edge.

Mount St. Mary's did its best to create more pressure especially in the final 15 minutes. Nikolov was steadfast in keeping the visitors from cutting into the lead along with help from his back line which provided two team saves in the match.

Fairfield returns to the pitch for its final home game of the regular season when it hosts Quinnipiac University on Wednesday, October 29. The team completes its regular season with a road game at Sacred Heart, looking to cement a bid to the MAAC Tournament within those two matches.
