NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Jon Clements converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute to lead the Fairfield University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Yale University, giving the Stags their first win of the season. Fairfield owns a 1-1-1 overall record through the first two weeks of the season.

The penalty kick was the Stags third shot of the game as the team finished the night with four total shots. James Taylor finished the team's offensive push with a shot less than two minutes later but the attempt was blocked before it made it to goalkeeper Blake Brown. The Bulldogs goalkeeper did not make a save in the game.

Yale made a strong run at the end of the game but the Stags goalkeeper Joe Martin was equal to the challenge. Cameron Kirdzik redirected a cross with his head that went toward the goal, but Martin made the stop. A minute later, Henry Albrecht put a shot on goal with seven seconds remaining in regulation, but Martin posted the save to end the game in Fairfield's favor.

The Bulldogs outshot the Stags by a 4-1 count in the first half but really saw their offense click in the second half. Yale posted nine shots in the final 45 minutes as the home team held a 13-4 advantage in shots. Martin made five saves in the game, including four in the second half.

Fairfield returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 18 when its heads to the University of Massachusetts for an afternoon game.
